Step onto a wooden floor and you cannot help being floored by its natural warmth , elegance and traditional beauty . The richness of grain and the healthy sheen of a timber floor are not the only attributes that appeal to most people ; the strength , durability , resilience and the exclusivity it offers are equally tempting .

A wooden flooring can make a room appear bigger and lighter ; it adds value and lends character to the house . Nothing ages more gracefully than wood . Timber floorboards darken as they age , becoming deeper and richer as they react to sunlight . They also blend well with any kind of decor .

Wooden floorboards were once a symbol of sophistication and good taste in ancestral house. They were essential building blocks of a house until the advent of new flooring materials , such as natural stone , ceramics and laminates , offered a wide variety of choice for architects and home owners .

Times beauty

But the wheel has come full circle . The timeless beauty of wood is recapturing minds . Today , wood is emerging as the preferred material for flooring . Houses , apartments , offices and even high-traffic establishments , such as hotels , hospitals and shops , are switching to wooden floors .

Easy to clean , hygienic and dust free , wooden floorboards also offer high impact resistance and better acoustics . They wear slowly and uniformly . Timber flooring does not trap dust , pollen and other allergens . It does not cause allergic electrostatic charging in rooms with electronic equipment , such as computers .
A variety of branded wooden floorboards is now available in the market as planks in standard sizes . The most popular versions are solid wood or hard wood , laminated wood and bamboo .

Interlocking planks

The planks are manufactured with tongues and grooves , which interlock with each other for easy installation and strong bonding . The planks are available in different textures to suit individual tastes . One of the characteristics of a hardwood floor is that it expands and contracts with changes in temperature and relative humidity . Normally , installers compensate for expansion by leaving a small gap between the floor and the wall .
A layer of underlay , usually foam , is placed on top of the existing floor for noise and heat insulation as well as to prevent moisture from seeping through to the wood . The boards are then placed on top and interlocked , the weight of the combined boards holding them in place .
Fast and easy , the floating floor configuration is the more preferred method of laying . Another advantage of the floating floor is that it can be removed easily and re-installed . Solid wood floorboards are available in various finishes , such as oak , teak, redwood , backwoods and mahogany .

Laminated wooden floorboards comprise a top layer of hardwood mounted on cross-laid softwood , plywood . They are durable and enable easy installation and maintenance and hence , preferred for offices , retail shops , hotels and homes . Laminated wood gives the natural look of real wood , it is stronger and more durable than conventional flooring and withstands rough use . In a house , the bedroom is considered a low traffic area , while the living room is a medium traffic area .
